Last time: If he has to shut down for two hours after performing his main function, perhaps it might be time for an upgrade?

So is this the episode where the show earns its TV-MA?

"It must be the Goblets of Giants!"
Looks more like a nuclear waste dump.

Does that make this a hot springs episode?

I mean, it takes so little to earn a show an adult rating...

Hey, squids. Let's send some to rural Georgia and make a cartoon out of it.

It's a Princess Mononoke fever dream.

Inuyasha wasn't on the original Toonami because its first episode had a guy nailed to a tree...

"This yours? You want it? ...come and get it."

I don't suppose sucking out the poison with your mouth is an option.

Under so much pressure, and not just because of how far down you are.

A few weeks ago, someone on this forum (I forget who) wrote that this show is about torturing children. They weren't joking.

Samurai Jack season five only used profanities in one episode, outside of the blood...

"You can't die here! We just got another season!"

Big...Bang.

That's not poison coming out.

That is cartoon-style bloating, and this is a serious moment!

Carole & Tuesday might have been a TV-14 if not for some singing mermaids...

This is...wow...

I think we should turn the volume down for this part.

OKAY! TV-MA! POINT TAKEN!

And now mosquitoes.

Well, this just got dark.

Hey, the bunny girl from the end credits, finally. Are you her mid-season replacement?

Just put your lips together and save her life.

Carry the girl whose arm you've just broken back to her hideout.

She lives in a giant dust bunny?

She looks like Aisha Clan-Clan and the Easter Bunny had a baby.

Hopefully a nice Hollow unlike the ones in Bleach.

Pretty sure that was me.

The funny thing is, this episode wasn't even the worst part of the show for me. That comes later.

This is probably the worst thing to ever happen to a child character on Toonami since Nina in FMA: Brotherhood.

Wow, I managed to make these talkback threads and avoid giving any hints spoiling the first of the big horrific things. I think this show is like Evangelion when even if everybody knows that the horrific thing is coming, it still shocks unless you know the exact episode number when the horrific things happen. Yes, this is a dark seinen not for the feint of heart. It's up to you if you want to stay on the train or not. I will say that I wouldn't classify this show as a shock seinen like Hellsing Ultimate as shock value isn't the only thing this show has. The world of the abyss is gorgeous and mysterious and it can be a joy to explore the world. Made in Abyss is a great show, but it might not be for everyone.

Believe it or not, there's actually a better analogy to the Nina situation coming up later. So you have that to look forward to.
Well, if I didn't give up on Tokyo Ghoul after the torture porn episode, I can stick with a much better show like this one. And we were all warned what to expect from the beginning.

And one more thing - the movie (Dawn of the Deep Soul) actually TOPS anything we see in the series.

Ack! Even without the spoiler ban, I'd be afraid to ask. I just hope the end of the story has a huge payoff to make the characters' suffering worth it.

Well, that was something shocking. And what happened to Riko this episode is just the tip of the iceberg? Oi.

A Hollow? Hrm, hope that means she's a scavenger and not a murderer... Or maybe she used to be a raider that got transformed by the Curse?

Wait, so Dawn of the Deep Soul is a canon movie picks up where this season ends? Like Mugen Train for Demon Slayer?
