Was expecting J-horror along the lines of Ju-On ("The Grudge") and Hell Girl, but this... ?
Pass. Too much talking and the atmosphere wasn't creepy enough. The characters were also boring.
Atleast Iczer-One had legit horror moments.
Those are not good examples. Grave of the Fireflies and Castle of Cagliostro were intended for family audiences in Japan, even those with young children. The former played on a double-bill with My Neighbor Totoro in theaters when it first came out in 1988.
A lot of anime aimed toward younger...
Back in the early to mid-1990's, Japanese imports were a hard sell to American network TV executives. It had to be made-in-America to be taken seriously. That changed with the surprise success of Power Rangers, which made it much easier for the Toei anime from Japan to later air on American TV.
Different era. The T-shirts in the early '90s also had writings like "Underachiever. And proud of it!" with Bart aiming a slingshot, which some schoolboards took as causing disruption in the classroom. This article goes into the mentality of the time: The Great Bart Simpson T-Shirt School Ban of...
I'm not a fan of Evangelion. After watching the original TV series and the Rebirth/EOE movies, I had my curiosity satisfied and felt it wasn't for me. While the end of the world and sociological themes were interesting, the characters were annoying. Also, some aspects of it were a little too...
Keep in mind the show was very controversial in the United States early on in its run (where even the President publicly condemned it). It's more likely the Japanese distributer(s) wanted to avoid the show tanking because of the bad press it got in its home country. Rebellious child characters...
Since AS appears to be using newer masters for Futurama, have Professor Farnsworth's "Sweet Zombie Jesus" lines been restored? They used to be edited years ago.
Whenever anime adaptations of her manga have been released by other companies, they've usually been given limited releases (except Urusei Yatsura aka "Lum the Invader Girl").
Back in the '90s, Viz was able to get Ranma advertised in practically every comic shop that sold anime and manga but...
Probably because Viz didn't license it. I suspect Inuyasha got an extra push from Viz, because they are co-owned by the publishing company that handles Takahashi's manga in Japan. They often go all out compared to the few times other companies have gotten her anime in the US, because they...
What a dark series (though not the darkest anime I've seen). It reminded me a little of Pan's Labyrinth or something else Guillermo del Toro directed. The subject of losing humanity is also a theme I've encountered before in countless Japanese media outside of their animation like theater plays...
I find the mysterious beings Riko and Reg encounter along the way more interesting than the main protagonists. This show kind of drags when it's just the two of them.
That wouldn't necessarily bar it from being classified as anime. The Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland movie is now considered an anime by many people and its original screenplay was written by Chris Columbus (director of Home Alone).
At first I thought this was a premature April Fools joke.
Ironic considering they were the same studio that animated Dragon Half, a gonzo D&D anime from 1993. Despite being only 2 episodes, I felt it had a lot more energy than the last two FLCL seasons combined.
I recall Gainax sold off a fair...
Somehow I doubt AS would want to license an old show they haven't aired before that has a lot of episodes and would require editing.
Not sure if Media Blasters still has this.
No HD masters exist and the only surviving video masters look bad on modern TVs.
ADV did one over a decade ago, but...
They produce dubs, but they're often not recorded where the companies are located if that's what you're asking.
I think the Lupin stuff is outsourced to various LA-based studios that share the same voice actor pool.
I would suggest Toonami dig into old IPs they already own and try rebooting them as anime for the block. Like what Adult Swim used to do with obscure Hanna-Barbara properties when they first started.
I don't think an edited version of Panty & Stocking would have worked anyway. Too many of the jokes revolve around sex and bathroom humor that are out of bounds for what AS could likely get away with.
Gantz might have been tied up with ADV wanting to promote their Anime Network at the time...
The only information I could find is on Sola Digital Art's Japanese page, which says they're awaiting a release in Japan. The English page doesn't say anything.
Many comparisons have been made between Black Swan (2010) and Perfect Blue (1998) as if Darren Aronofsky cribbed from Satoshi Kon, but I think he improved upon the source material.
Nina's paranoia in Black Swan comes off as a lot more scary than Mimi's in Perfect Blue, because it's told from...
I'd think it's more likely this show is a lower priority for them to keep exclusive, because it's been out of production for so long. It's also possible the syndication rights were still available and AS jumped at the opportunity.
This reminds me a bit of Battle Angel (the manga, not the live-action James Cameron movie), but with the main heroine fighting Matrix-like humans instead of mutated cyborgs.
The mural Elle walks by of herself sprouting angel wings looks a lot like Gally/Alita from the manga cover pages.
Doesn't...
I wanted to like this show, but the characters kept putting me off (except maybe Karin, who seemed to have something resembling a distinct personality). It reminded me of those bad one-shot OAVs from the '90s Bennett the Sage reviews.
Outside of anime fandom, the only people I've come across who remember it are those who saw it on TV back in the 1960's.
Atleast in the US, it pretty much fell off the radar after the original show stopped airing in the 1970's and never recovered. The 2000's reboot may have gotten overshadowed...
After seeing the newest Rick and Morty anime short (the Akibahara one), I wonder whether the possibility of an actual anime series being greenlighted becomes more likely by the day.
With Disney having no involvement with these new Fox Entertainment shows, could it open up the possibility of Adult Swim getting them second-hand?
After the sale of FX to Disney, Fox Ent. has no dedicated entertainment outlets on cable.
