Seems there might be a new sequel in the works. Shane Black will direct and co-write and Fred Dekker is the main script writer.
"As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway, why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?

Black said he doesn’t like reboots generally, but can "really get behind inventive sequels", noting that he likes "the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button."

He went on to say that Dekker, who’s writing the screenplay, is "perfect" for the project, adding the two had a blast writing the screenplay for The Monster Squad together.
Shane Black Says the Predator Reboot Is Actually a Sequel

Personally, I'd rather see a Predators sequel than revisit the two Aliens vs. Predators movies... in any case it's poetic to see Black helming it when he refused to work on the script of the first Predator movie even after he got a role in it.

I agree, if he does it, I will definitely see it. They need a new version to clean up the franchise, it hasn't had nearly as many films as Alien franchise, so hopefully this can be good.

With Predator, each movie has been essentially a standalone story with only minor references to the previous movies. "Rebooting" would be completely pointless as there is barely any canon to reboot concerning the movies alone (the comics/novels have added a lot, though). I`d like a Predator movie that goes further with the concept instead of rehashing the "Predator takes out the entire supporting cast for lulz, then main hero kills predator, movie over" plot the last 3 movies had.

Personally, I'd like to see a movie with the Predator in the future, around the same time as the alien movies. It would be an interesting change of pace.

The Black and Dekker jokes here are way too good to pass up :D. This whole franchise is basically built around a one-joke high-concept premise. You switch up cosmetic changes (the setting), but it's essentially "Predators hunt humans with big guns, human eventually kill Predators." It's fun, but it's a a glorified B-movie and don't know how much more you can bring to it.

Scott seems aloof about connecting this to the Alien franchise for some reason. If Shane Black returns to Predator with a planned sequel, than this can exist as well. How, we don't know. It would be cool to see these somehow tie together someway.

I believe Dark Horse already did an exercise in that and managed to connect all 3. "Fire and Ice". They wrote it with 'everything in canon.' Never got to reading it myself.

There was an Alien 3? Lol, sorry, that movie was pretty bad. Even Fincher wanted no part of it. I don't even think I saw Resurrection because of that.

It'll be nice to see them tie up a nice little trilogy. Though, don't be surprised if studio execs want to introduce a new heroine to continue the franchise.

lol. As for a new heroine, they could go with Ripley's daughter but I think they used her in that recent video game. Not that the game's story is canon.

Fine with me. It's starting in the right direction; we'll see where it goes.

If by Ripley's daughter you mean Amanda (because Isolation was about her), Aliens began after she died. If you mean Newt, then yes, I want to see the grown Newt. If we're ignoring Alien 3 and Ripley is in her 60's then there is no reason to not have Newt.
Oh! So Isolation fit between Alien and Aliens. Newt is a great idea, though.

So this is going to be the final Alien movie? Or is it just going to be the finale for Ripley at long last? Weaver seemed to make it clear this is the last one, period.

Blomp just said the movie will NOT undo the later sequels. And now I'm totally confused.

How can you have a sequel that takes place after Aliens, with Sigourney Weaver, in her 60's, and say Alien 3 takes place after it? Unless it's actually after Resurrection. But...the sketches show HICKS.

And I want my grown-up Newt, dammit.

Perhaps he's just being diplomatic to avoid offending the people who worked on 3 and Resurrection?

And time travel reboots seem to be the big trend now. Maybe they'll pull a Star Trek/X-Men/Terminator and have time travel somehow to undo the sequels while still acknowledging them?

Source? Because every article I read (like this one) says they're tossing movies 3 and 4 out the window.

Granted, it's possible this guy was interpreting something wrong, because he also wrote the movie would take place "between Alien and Aliens" which is impossible in every way.
Yeah, the writer must not have heard it right. It's why for situations like this, I prefer a video recording to accompany an article. I'm not an expert on the franchise but I'm pretty sure they said Ripley was in stasis for 50 or 60 years before she was awakened at the start of Aliens. If they a fake-out dream sequence, fans would be livid. Or if it is between movies, would they have Weaver play Ripley's daughter still searching for mom well into her later years?

3/23: Blomkamp talks about changing something due to Ridley Scott/Prometheus. Hmm and the title of his Alien movie is a spoiler in itself.
"I changed the one thing [Scott] felt was bumping Prometheus a little bit. One thing that makes me feel good about it is that Ridley is producing it. He likes the idea of what I want to make. It's kinda quite bold, but it gives away too much if I say the title. But in the event that it doesn't work, I'm dead in the water.
And reconfirms dislike of Alien 3 and Resurrection
Where it went after 'Aliens' to me, as a fan, was wrong. Theres a [expletive] missing as a fan that I would want to see.

Just found the video from which that quote was taken:

I'm not convinced that's an outright decree that "Aliens 3 and 4 are still intact". Maybe they are, maybe they aren't - Blomkamp is just saying he wants to be connected to Alien 1 and 2, first and foremost.

Still, Blomkamp is starting to talk in riddles more and more (with this whole "I'm not telling you the title just yet" business). I'm expecting some plot twists...maybe everybody is a clone in this new film. *shrug* Maybe the Terminator traveled through time to when Ripley was a child and changed history. :)
