Actually I’m intending to end this thread of the discussion with 393. The thing was when AS decided to double the broadcasts last January I calculated April 16 or 17 would be the end date. Unfortunately it went back to single broadcasts and by then the edit button on the OP was removed.
Thank you for changing it.
I see, because of that second Chunin Exam flashback arc starting in 394? So pretty much, you plan to make a talkback thread for 394-413 then another after that for 414-431?

Wait and See, Yojimbo.

Episode 385 Obito Uchiha

Based on Naruto Chapters 653.

Lord First!
Despite Obito-10’s insistence that he is no longer human, Naruto refuses to believe it, having mind-linked with him and knowing he still possesses his memories and feelings.

Obito-10 thinks he is doing the job of a Hokage. He also prefers the shortcut over an unknown rugged path with no promise of fulfillment. Naruto argues that there is no shortcut.

Parallels
Obito-10 admits Naruto is like him, which motivates him to break his spirit.

Naruto confronts Obito-10 on the degree of his conviction. A moment of thought, Obito10 answers that he is very sure of what he is doing. A parallel to Obito asking Kakashi the same thing in the Kakashi Gaiden.

Remember When
Obito-10 remembers an incident of Rin treating his bruised cheek after his defeat by Gai. He tells her his plan to save the world by becoming the Hokage and ending the War. He compliments Rin that, by watching over him and keeping him healthy, she is also doing her part in saving the world.

A good portion of the episode is an extended version of the Obito backstory seen in Episode 342 with dialogue added.

Love, Family, Friendship
In the past, Obito tells Rin her importance in helping him save the world. He blushes while confessing this, and when Rin moves up close to his face, he gets worked up and backs away.

But in the Manga…
Several of Manga Naruto’s glares at Obito-10 are softened in the Anime.

The Anime joins the scene of Obito talking to Rin with the scene of him declaring his wish to become Hokage.

The Anime adds the lengthy flashback of Obito’s past.

I’m Always Watching

It should be noted that on the same week this episode was broadcast (November 9-15 2014), Kishimoto had just concluded NARUTO with the joint publications of Chapters 699 & 700. So this means we’re heading for the conclusion, right? Right?…

So looks like the extended version of Obito's backstory concludes... if Naruto invoking what Rin always used to say to him won't work, dunno what will. Getting betraying by Madara maybe?

Was a nice parallel to see Minato give them the Chunin Exam news on the same bridge that Kakashi does with Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura.

Episode 386: I’m Always Watching
Adapted from Naruto Chapter 653

Lord First!
Naruto gives Obito-10 his hand, asking him to reject his way.

The Plot Thickens…
Naruto theorizes that for all of Obito-10’s vocal rejection of his identity, he really wants to keep it. This is exemplified by his refusal to lose his memories when he was absorbed by Ten Tails.

Naruto expects Obito-10 to repent for his crimes.

Remember When (or Not)
Obito being torn apart and then rejoined during his Ten Tails transformation is repeated.

Obito grilling into Neji-mourning Naruto is also repeated.

There are more extensions to the Obito flashbacks from Episodes 342-344. For instance, Obito initially faked losing the Chunin Exams to Rin and Kakashi, before revealing by paper that he has earned his Chunin-ship.

One scene particular, has Rin dressing Obito’s wounded hand after a test. Added is Obito trying to hide his pain with a cool façade, only for Rin to demand his honesty. She believes in his wish to become Hokage & End the War, so she will have to look after him (fulfilling Obito’s observation that helping him is like saving the world).

Love, Family, and Friendship
Naruto confirms that Obito-10’s memories of his love for his Team allowed him to fight getting erased and then taking over Ten Tails.

The aforementioned “I’m always watching” scene.

But in the Manga…
The recap of Obito being pulled apart by Ten Tails is depicted in a grainy, scratchy film.

The Manga’s extension of the “I’m watching you” scene is further extended in the Anime: Obito trying to hide his wounded hand, with Rin demanding he show it to her.

When Rin hurts Obito’s bandaged hand (to force him to knock off his facade), the Manga shows her hand squeezing his. The Anime instead has her cause the pain by tightening the bandage (by pulling the knot ends).

The Manga depicts Naruto’s eyes as having some liner.

Yay, Obito got defeated! 1 down, 1 to go. A really big 1 to go. But I guess in addition White and Black Zetsu are still wild cards. Oh yeah, all they have to do is seal Madara. Way to oversimplify a probably impossible task but I'm still super intrigued how in the heck Madara is gonna be defeated.

And the beasts are all freed. So I guess that means Shukaku will reunite with Gaara at long last? Hmm, but what of the other Tailed Beasts...

Episode 387: The Promise That Was Kept
Adapted from Naruto Chapters 654-655

Plot First!
With Naruto’s urging, plus the Alliance tugging at him, Obito-10 rejects his goal. The Beasts are extracted from his person, stripping of his Six Paths powers, plus the scaled skin, although his hair remains white.

The Six Beasts are freed, including Shukaku. For some reason, Gynku is included in the group, even though only his tentacle was used in the revival of Ten Tails.

Kakashi returns to Earth, sitting on Obito and ready to stab him to death, but is prevented by Edo-Minato. This is probably Kakashi’s discovery of his sensei being an Edo-Tensei.

Seeing Edo-Minato and Kakashi handle Obito, Naruto climbs the Divine Tree to fire a Wind-Shuriken Rasengan on Edo-Minato.

The Plot Thickens…
Obito-10 at first resists Naruto, grappling his neck. But Naruto punches him, telling him he sees his dreams and that the conviction of his rejection is bull.

Obito-10 then sees Naruto become his younger self. He goes to a dream world of himself, Rin, Kakashi and Minato. Three personas symbolizing his own delusions become doppelgangers of the three, tempting him to accept their reality. However, the 'real' Obito states that Rin would never consider the present him. This persuades Obito-10 to give up.

Obito tells Kakashi and Edo-Minato that Rin’s death took away the light of his world, changing it into a black hell. Kakashi comments that he used to see the world in the same way, but he has used his Sharigan eye to view the hopeful future represented by Naruto.

Obito wonders if Naruto can change things even in this dark reality.

Remember When (or Not)?
Obito remembers his declaration in the pit, Kakashi telling him that he can’t fill the hole with delusions, but by friends.

Shukaku remembers Naruto in the fight during the Konoha Crush.

Son Goku remembers Naruto wanting to help the Beasts.

Edo-Minato remembers informing his apprentices of the Bridge Mission.

Kakashi remembers Obito giving him his eye.

Love, Family, and Friendship
Edo-Minato feels that Kakashi would best understand Obito, as Naruto would best understand Sasuke.

Edo-Minato compliments Naruto’s nagging and lecturing as characteristic of his mother.

Edo-Minato comments that maybe Rin arranged this (from the beyond) as punishment for his failure to protect her.

Kakashi sees Naruto as the future, promising to help him if he ever fails or falls.

But in the Manga…
The Manga version of Kid Kakashi is missing his belt and sacks. The Anime remedies this.

The procession of close-ups during the tug-of-war is in a different order. Also, several close-ups are joined together (Choji and Ino, Tenten and Sai, Shizune, Mifune, and Durai).

Manga Tsunade is still shown wearing lipstick. The Anime removes this.

When Obito-10 is depowered, the Anime has Gai let out a triumphant yell.

The Anime added several flashbacks.

Back to two episodes again!

My First Friend

Gaara goes to his former Beast Shukaku for a favor.

The Adored Little Sister

1651926738448.png

At the time of Broadcast, the Manga had ended and Studio Perriot released a Grand Finale movie (of sorts) called THE LAST: NARUTO THE MOVIE. One important character in said film was Hanabi Hyuga, Hinata's sister. However, Hanabi had not been seen since the Chunin Exams Arc. To promote her role in the film, SHIPPUDEN made a two-parter about Hanabi's POV from childhood to the present War, as she struggles with the traditions of the Hyuga Clan and how it affects her views on Neji and her beloved sister.

The Official Naruto Shippuden Thread

OPENING “Silhouette” By KANA BOON
CLOSING “It’s Absolutely No Good” By Shiori Tomiki

Last Time on NARUTO SHIPPUDEN
Obito-10 realizes the Infinite Tsukuyomi was not the right path for him, and embraces Naruto's words. The Alliance manages to pull the Tailed Beasts out of him, stripping him of all his powers. Kakashi returns to finish him off, but Edo-Minato stops him. Naruto runs up to the Divine Tree to finish Edo-Madara.

Perhaps they should have waited one more weekend, then do the Hanabi two-parter in one broadcast. Oh well. Please no spoilers.

The few seconds of Madara's plight that was seen looks too good to be true. Hashirama had him neutralized, Naruto connected with his giant Rasenshuriken, the shinobi alliance raced off in unison to seal Madara, the Tailed Beasts want to help. What horrifying thing will happen to them all next? Gotta be Black Zetsu or the White Zetsu fused to Obito pulling something. And a 2 part movie tie-in filler... Par for the course at this point. Well guess it's a 2 week wait.

Episode 388: My First Friend
Adapted from Naruto Chapter 656

Lord First!
Edo-Hashirama binds Edo-Madara with his wood dragons, neutralizing his chakra-absorption abilities.

Naruto fires his Wind-Style Rasengan Shuriken at the immobilized Edo-Madara. He hops aboard Sai’s Ink Bird to head for the target.

The Alliance charge to the spot where the Rasengan hit.

Gaara goes to the Taled Beasts to ask Shukaku to help him form the Sand Mauseoleum to bind Edo-Madara. Shukaku complies, not for Gaara, but so he doesn’t get one-upped by Kurama. The other Tailed Beasts want to assist as well. Gaara leads them.

Remember When (or Not)
Gaara remembers his childhood and his encounters with Naruto.

Son Goku remembers Naruto wanting to help him.

Love, Family, and Friendship
The Alliance rallies to Naruto.

Edo-Hashirama thanks Edo-Minato for his mercy.

Gaara doesn’t demand Shukaku’s help. He asks for it.

When Son Goku asks Gaara the nature of his association with Naruto, Gaara answers that the Ninja was his first friend.

But in the Manga…
The Manga adds a glow to Edo-Madara when Naruto’s Rasengan hits him. The Anime removes this.

Except for Son Goku’s reminiscences, all the flashbacks are Anime-only.

Hanabi’s Decision

The Official Naruto Shippuden Thread

OPENING “Silhouette” By KANA BOON
CLOSING “It’s Absolutely No Good” By Shiori Tomiki

Last Time on NARUTO SHIPPUDEN
Hanabi adores her big sister Hinata, but the Hyuga Clan begins to color the girl’s view. Finding the younger sister a better choice for Clan heiress then her softer sister, the Clan decides the sisters shall duel for the role. During the fight, Hinata hesitates over taking advantage of a weakness her sister has shown, allowing Hanabi to beat her. The winner loses all regard for her “weak” sister.
I do wish the channel can make up its mind on whether to double the broadcasts or not. Anyway, please no spoilers.

Now, that's over, back to the main arc. Probably Madara doing something horrifying. I guess this 2 parter would have meant more if I saw the movie it's tied to but eh.

After hearing that "fil-thy beasts" line for several weeks in the opening bumper, it's finally here. Still sounds weird.

Damn, I knew it. Black Zetsu shows up all of a sudden, uses Obito to restore Madara to life. And he easily learns how to use sage art. How much longer before it gets ever worse: he regains 2 Rinnegans? Takes the beasts? Becomes the Ten Tails' jinchiriki? The alliance is boned. Though one thing. Black Zetsu claims to be Madara's will made real? Something about its words to Minato and Kakashi at the end made me wonder if it was telling the truth, "you underestimated me as well," and it's really going to end up being the big bad and/or betraying even Madara somehow.

Episode 391: Madara Uchiha Arises!
Adapted from Naruto Chapters 656-657

Lord First!
Naruto’s attack on Edo-Madara fails (due to the healing factor). This causes Edo-Madara to seal him, while Naruto and Sai fly for the latter to perform his Sealing Jutsu.

Obito attempts to perform the Rinne Path on the casualties of the Alliance. Unfortunately…

Black Zetsu makes his reappearance since Chojuro impaled him down in Episode 320. He possesses Obito and forces him to direct the Rinne Path into…

Edo-Madara is resurrected. This thread will now refer to him as Madara.

During the confusion, the blind Madara frees himself and pins Edo-Hashirama down with chakra rods. He then absorbs the First Hokage’s Senjutsu powers into himself.

Sai, Naruto, and Sasuke both try to stop Madara, but fail. In Sasuke’s case, his Ameratsu only renders Madara shirtless.

After killing a few more Ninja, Madara faces the Tailed Beasts.

The Plot Thickens…
Turns out Black Zetsu had never really been immobilized by Chojuro. He established telepathic contact with Edo-Madara at the beginning of his fight with the Kages. While Chojuro's attention was on the upper part of Black Zetsu's body, the lower half burrowed its black essence into the ground, waiting to make its move.

Kurama-Yin explains to Edo-Minato that since Obito has the Gedo Statue inside of him, as well as having all seven Beasts plucked out of him, he cannot die from losing the Tailed Beasts. He will be practically drained unable to move. He knows all this from his experience with the Sage of Six Paths.

Feeling reforming too easy an action for his crimes, Obito decides to sacrifice his life.

Edo-Madara thanks Naruto for removing the Beasts out of Obito, making the situation easier.

When Madara absorbs Edo-Hashirama's Senjutsu, the face-imprint on his pectoral takes on the Sage Tattoos.

Edo-Hashirama discovers his DNA is in Madara.

Due to being resurrected, Madara loses his Edo-Tensei-replicated Rinnegan eyes (Obito still possesses one of them). He takes Senjutsu from Edo-Hashirama so he can sense his opponents by chakra. He also refers to this as his main plan, to combine Senju and Uchiha powers as promised by the Uchiha Tablet.

Black Zetsu attempts to leave Obito and give Madara back the right Rinnegan eye. However, Edo-Minato and Kakashi have another idea altogether. Black Zetsu prefers to remain possessing Obito as protection, saying he is the only thing keeping Obito alive.

Black Zetsu refers to Obito as a traitor. He also comments that Kakashi and Edo-Minato underestimate him.

Madara is excited that he can now do battle with actual feeling inside him.

Madara discovers Sasuke has the Mangekyo as well. He considers taking them.

Madara has no respect whatsoever to the Tailed Beasts.

Love, Family, and Friendship
Kakashi and Edo-Minato are pleased to learn Obito won’t die.

Originally believing Nagato betrayed him by using the Rinne Rebirth on Konoha, Obito now realizes he had done the right thing. He also compliments Jiraya for starting this (being mentors to both Nagato and Naruto).

Madara compliments his summoner (Kabuto) for creating his Edo-Tensei body.

Madara respects Sasuke, asking him to join forces.

Remember When (or Not)?
Obito remembers his child self telling him that Rin only followed Obito Uchiha and not this present person.

Nagato's Rinne Rebirth of the Leaf Village is portrayed.

Black Zetsu getting impaled by Chojuro, and his subsequent escape.

Edo-Madara’s faceoff with the Kage is portrayed, with him making contact with Black Zetsu.

Madara’s last peaceful (relatively) talk with Hashirama at the Uchiha Tablet shrine.

But in the Manga...
The Anime adds the Sealing posts falling from the air.

When Black Zetsu possesses Obito, the Manga latter yells his name. The Anime seems calmer in his exclamation.
