The Scooby Doo direct to DVD movie line has been going on for a very long time. In fact, it's turning 25 next year. One thing I'm wondering is if, at some point future, the movies might be moved to being released on HBO Max. Let me explain with some other direct to DVD movie line ups.
First up, we have the Barbie direct to DVD movie line up. The movies came out at a fairly steady pace since the early 2000s (I think 2001). It stayed that way until 2017, with Barbie: Video Game Hero being the last movie to be released first on DVD. That same year saw Barbie: Dolphin Magic debut on Netflix first. However, this wouldn't be considered a routine until 2020 with the release of Barbie: Princess Adventure, mainly due to the newer movies being connected to the 2018 series Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures.
Another example is Curious George. There were some decently sized gaps for the first few movies. After the 2006 theatrical movie, the movie line up initially switched over to DVD with Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey coming out in 2010 and Curious George 3: Back To The Jungle in 2015. However, about 5 years later, the movies would switch over to being released on the Peacock streaming service, with Curious George: Go West, Go Wild coming out September 8, 2020 and Curious George: Cape Ahoy coming out September 30, 2021. They did test the waters with this a bit in 2019 with Curious George: Royal Monkey coming out on both Hulu and DVD on September 10 before later coming on Peacock the following year.
The Scooby Doo direct to DVD movie lineup has been around much longer, though the thought apparently didn't come up at some point. I wouldn't be surprised if they came out on HBO Max first at some point. What do you think though?
