6/8: Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman are currently writing it and only shared it's codename is "Firehouse."

6/9: Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan:
-had the story in mind before they finished Afterlife

-were able to lay out their plans with Ivan Reitman before his passing and he was excited
-confirmed Ernie Hudson will be back of course and Winston's company (seen briefly at the end of AL's end tag) is called Zeddemore Industries and figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters
-a limited series from Dark Horse Comics coming out late next year will be canon and bridge the gap between Afterlife and this sequel movie

The Production Weekly issue 1317 says the sequel starts production in Spring 2023.

So yeah, no way they can make the December 2023 date. 2024 for sure. They should just move it to June 7, 2024 and tie it into the franchise's 40th anniversary.

Okay I admit to not being that much of a fan of Afterlife but I do hope that this 5th Ghostbusters movie (and 4th canon one I guess) can actually be the first sequel in this franchise where people just all believe in ghosts and we don't waste a lot of time with characters moping and doping around and not believing in spirits or wasting time trying to convince them and seeing the idea as a hoax or not relevant anymore and blah blah blah. Like seriously that has been an issue with the franchise since Ghostbusters 2 because... that was something from the first movie but it made sense in the first movie where no one knew that ghosts were real but yeah that isn't the case anymore so if we're running with this world now let's just run with that idea. Like that's something the Real Ghostbusters cartoon never had an issue with so it's obnoxious all the other movies had so I'll give massive props to this film if it ditches that idea and we just have the main heroes dealing with ghost problems not in people believing they don't deal with ghost problems or some other bull.

It's funny that Akyroyd has a huge knowledge of mystic supernatural world. He is highly capable of probably writing a script himself.

He has several times. But they become too out there, expensive/tons of SFX, and lacked character development/no distinct personalitites. That's why Ivan Reitman brought in Harold Ramis for the first movie to balance the script out. Aykroyd also did his own draft for the second movie, which was totally different than what GB2 was, and the never made third movie which I think he did his own draft of Hellbent before partnering with Tom Davis then the drafts were written by other writers while being overseen by him and Reitman then I think Aykroyd might have done his own draft or two again before Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan came in with their Afterlife pitch.

Yeah, I think his original script was like 400 pages or something like that.

No, it was only 180 pages when Aykroyd finished it in January 1983. While he was still writing it, he showed an early draft to Reitman, it was 70-80 pages, and he recounted Stay Puft was on page 20 and it was battle after battle after that and multiple GB teams were involved. At the time, he estimated that movie would have cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

I apologize @Yojimbo. I was mistaken. It was Blues Bros. where Akroyd had a 324 pg script. Yes with GB he got help from Ramis. Sorry, bud.

They....they're making ANOTHER Ghostbusters movie?

I know this thread has been on the Entertainment forum for months, but I don't believe something exists until I see a trailer. So imagine my surprise when I saw this trailer drop earlier today.

I'm all for it. If we can move beyond "Gozer the Gozerian" and "nostalgia", it'll be fun to see Ghostbusters battling ghosts.

EDIT: Any chance Signourney Weaver's character can come back?

YES. Awesome trailer. The Firehouse is gonna get wrecked. Just when Winston fixed it up. I think the trailer is hinting there's a hidden room on the third floor of the Firehouse with an artifact inside that the big bad wants, probably to fully power up, and hence why it attacks the Firehouse. Love the tweaks to the packs, the new uniforms, the originals in the trailer. The title I'm on the fence about but on the other hand, kinda cliche if they keep using paranormal terms in the title and NY is the Empire State. Overall, looks really fun.

Any chance Signourney Weaver's character can come back?
In an interview from earlier this year, she said she isn't.
