Man… I have a feeling CKP is going to die. I mean the removing billy and Mandy from the schedule, with just two shows for one full hour each was a huge mistake by CKP’s part. It’s sad, because CKP did start out strong, but when the schedule change came around late February/March this year the schedule for the block became a mess. I just hope CKP add more shows sooner or later or it will suffer the same fate as nickrewind.

I think WBD is increasingly become unenthusiastic with linear TV business because profit is getting thinner, but it isn't become unprofitable yet. Advertisers are no longer want to pay too much for advertising slot on linear TV, so more headache for WBD and they don't know to do about how to smash the debt after messy acquisition with AOL and AT&T.

WBD's "unenthusiasm" hardly has anything to do with a block like Checkered Past. It's all under CN/AS's hands whether the block remains.
WBD own Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and their Checkered Past, so all does matter. Zaslav expected Michael Ouweleen to make more money on CN/AS linear TV and he has to answer to Zaslav, and Zaslav expected more money to pay debt off as he promised to investors that WBD would make a lot of money. Checkered Past was last hope for WBD to make a lot of money on advertising sales.

Zaslav don't want to see himself as failed CEO and that is his words. His plan was pay much of debt off and sell WBD to someone.

The decline of cable TV and slow start with streaming service have WBD disappointed.

That has a lot to do with the block, since both Cartoon Network and Adult Swim are owned by Warner Brothers, like @Moe already mentioned. As most of already know, Cartoon Network was originally a joint venture between WB and Turner Broadcasting, and now that Turner exists in name only, the whole network is owned by Warner Media.

In any event, I don't think that Warner Discovery ever really intended for Checkered Past to make a lot of money. The block's main purpose is to keep the CN brand alive and in the public eye while WBD continues to develop new projects, which presumably will air on the channel at some point.

I see CKP as an amusing diversion, but not the savior of the network. CKP never seemed like something that would run on the channel for years.

Why? Checkered Past isn’t like Toonami where its ratings are constantly under a microscope because all of its content costs money to acquire. The network owns everything Checkered Past airs, it’s basically free to operate. And I’d be willing to bet even now, it’s putting down better numbers the endless loop of Gumball/TTGo it replaced.

It would be nice if they spiced up the content but I see no reason to be concerned of it going away.

So just a little shower thought about this block. I think a lot of you think about it the wrong way. It’s not designed, nor was it ever intended to be appointment TV that you watch every single day of the week. Obviously, some people have, and those people are feeling the harsh burn of reruns now, but they are the minority of this audience. This was always meant to be a millennial “catch it when you can” type of block. It starts at 5pm, so if you are a working stiff, you are still clocking out while the block is starting. Live in CST? The block starts at 4, you aren’t even out of work when the block starts. But, you might catch it on your day off, or a day you get out early. To that crowd, odds of landing on a rerun are much slimmer. There is no consequence for missing days, or even weeks. All these shows are episodic.

I think that’s why they aren’t showing any urgency to shake up the schedule. On top of simply just not having the content to do so, there just isn’t any need to. At the end of the day, this block is just a creative way to fill some tough to compete in hours with cheap (or in this case, entirely free) content. Tagging in B&M keeps it “fresh” even though nothing really changes.

With satellite it comes on at 2 pm where I live. The west coast feed is still in SD and I can’t imagine many people actually watch it on the directv west coast feed on a three hour delay with bad quality. It is more convenient to DVR the shows I feel like following and watch later when I have the time, plus I can fast forward through the commercials.

There are a few regular promos for Fox shows that give you an idea of what AS are going for. “Must half watch tv” is one which shows people wearily doing the laundry, cooking, etc while adult swim is on in the background. Another features an AI program talking about their schedule being on autopilot. Another ad has a VHS aesthetic, looking like a well worn tape of American Dad, Bob’s Burgers and King of the Hill.

The idea is to have comfort food available for a marketable demographic. You’d be surprised how many people just watch Fox reruns on AS or Friends on Nick at Night every night after getting home, even if they’ve seen the same episode a million times before. Checkered Past is just an extension of the same idea. It aims to have familiar favorites available when you get home, to evoke the feeling of getting home from school and turning on CN to see Dexter when you were a kid.

SD quality looked horrible on DirecTV and Dish but fairly good on Time Warner, Bright House and Spectrum in my area. No west coast feed on cable TV.

YouTube TV assign west coast feeds based on location - if Los Angeles, you gets west feed and if NYC, you gets east feed. Hulu Live TV has east and west feed for all customers.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the marketable demographic are sure as hell are not getting tired of seeing the same crap over and over again, when you can just watch the same show on streaming services on a cheaper price. Because screw variety on cable TV, am I right? lol

Okay, okay, I get it. It gets them views. Spare me for being ignorant and stupid over here, but even the most marketable demographic would like to have variety once in a while, but God forbid if linear TV actually does that crap.

And with the topic at hand about Checkered Past. Like I said before, I don't hate Checkered Past, I like the bumps, but I already had my fill with Classic CN shows, and there is no reason for me to watch this block. I don't know, maybe because I'm so pessimistic towards Warner Bros in recent times that my expectations for CN has just hit below rock bottom.

Half of the shows that have aired on here (Dexter, Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, Evil Con Carne) aren’t even on streaming and haven’t aired much in years. I’m sure I’m not the only one in the audience who hasn’t seen some of these shows in decades. Some of the later episodes I had never even seen before. People are overblowing how repetitive the block is. A lot of episodes have only aired once or twice. There are episodes of Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, Dexter, Ed’s, Courage, and Grim which haven’t even aired yet. The worst offender on scheduling was Courage, but the fourth season is ending next week and they will finally finish airing all episodes soon. This doubled up run let them quickly get through all the missing episodes from prior runs.

If your attitude towards it is that you are already sick of old CN cartoons, that’s fine, but the block was never going to please you because the point of it is to bring back memorable classics. As much as I’d like to see Johnny Bravo join the block, the number of other viable hit Powerhouse shows to air is not very high.

I watched the first episode of Robot Jones recently and was puzzled this show ever made it to air. If they tried airing obscure failed cartoon cartoons like it, the block would become history. The badly dated (even at time of release) animation style and unrelatable robot main character doomed it then and would doom it now.

I didn’t know Johnny Bravo was on Boomerang as recently as 2018. I think I last saw it on Boomerang in 2012 or 2013, when it was also airing on Cartoon Planet on CN. They likely removed it from Boomerang because the CN shows didn’t do well there. Since there are little chances of Johnny Bravo rerunning on Boomerang or being remade by CN, it has better odds of airing on Checkered Past than PPG.

Hey, don't take this the wrong way. I'm not sick of the old Cartoon Cartoons. I still love them and they still hold near and dear to my heart. Sure, some of them were memorable than others, but I still love them.

I'm not expecting Checkered Past to please me because I know they're not. It just that everything has been going on at WBD left a sour taste in my mouth, and I left unenthusiastic about the block as a whole.

To be fair, Dexter's Lab used to be on Max, but not anymore. As for Cow and Chicken and I am Weasel, it's on Max in Latin America, not in the US. I'm not sure about Evil Con Carne though.

Dexter was on prime for a while too, but now only on Amazon video if you buy the episodes… it’s honestly a bit baffling a show that still gets daily airtime on AS has not returned to Max when the Prime contract expired three months ago.

iTunes has Dexter's Laboratory that is available to purchase for years and it is not exclusive to Amazon for buy episodes.
