The Simpsons "Cremains Of The Day" - Okay I know the Simpsons isn't a continuity based show and is very episodic and hell even "The Many Saints of Springfield" made a joke on how sometimes they totally forget plot points and character beats they set up earlier that didn't wind up going anywhere, but if this episode is going to bring up and make a point that Carl is still with Naima, why are they totally ignoring that Moe got engaged with Maya? Hell they could have even made a joke about that when Moe says to Homer "I ain't got nothing" Homer could point out he's engaged surprising Moe who thought that was a fever dream or something like that. Seriously guys it's 2024 and you're doing ideas and stories made for this current generation at least try and get your act together. Which also reminds me that this episode missed the potential for a really amazing joke; instead of just ending with Moe like having hidden the diamonds on him it SHOULD have ended with the guys all cheering to Larry's ashes and promising to never leave a friend behind again... which is when Sam busts in and asks if he can hang out and Homer goes "who the hell is that?" And the others just shrug as Sam walks away dejected.
Because I want to give them major props for actually doing an episode on Larry the barfly. Granted it's on him dying and the joke is how no one knew him or got to know him at all but it's still something especially for a character that even in my old school Simpsons Episode guide just listed as one of the generic barflies you just saw in the background early on back when the only regulars in Moe's Tavern were Homer and Barney. Once Lenny and Carl became more regulars at the place it really became more about that group so I do really like the idea of actually focusing a bit on Larry and trying to do right by him one last time. I also appreciate that they really only had Marge there to motivate the guys to at least try and care about one of the regular barflies and Lisa and Bart just doing quick at the funeral house gag. I admit I think even the earlier seasons for as probably much more overall funny they were would NEVER have a plot so focused on Homer without them for such long gaps and force them in a side plot which this didn't really need. As honestly just the banter between Homer, Moe Lenny and Carl is great from them arguing over what happens after death to Moe trying to pin Homer as the one who wanted to lie about the sapphires to Lenny wanting to go on the scenic route for Larry's sake or even Homer not knowing to go on 3 and how Larry wound up saving him. Heck even the joke about Fat Tony's lose ends thus was good and I don't know if one of them has worked for me in like... twenty years so that's impressive. So yeah just a really solid one all the way around... if it hit the continuity and ending better probably would have been one of the true highlights of the season but still quite solid.
